Mike Collins 2nd Hour Closing Statement

Belgium Closing Statement

I represent Belgium, and the genocide was not our fault. I’ll admit that it was wrong of us to leave and let the genocide go on, but the U.N. told us that we could not shoot, so we had no means to protect ourselves. If we had stayed, countless of our soldier would have died. I still believe that France was mainly responsible for the genocide, because they trained MRND, who trained the Interhamawe. France also supported the Interhamawe and told the Hutus and the Tutsis were the enemies and had to be killed. France supported the slaughter of the Tutsis, and they basically started it.

France did not care about all the lives being lost. Their president said, “In such countries, genocide is not too important." What he said is very racist and immoral. Hundreds of thousands of people were being hacked to pieces with machetes, and their president simply said it didn’t matter.

I also believe that the Interhamawe caused the genocide, too. They weren’t “brainwashed” like they said they were. They chose to kill the Tutsis. They also claimed that their families were at risk if they didn’t kill the Tutsis. Keyword: Kill. But, they did much more than that. There was torture, rape, and other horrible crimes against the Tutsis that were done by the Interhamawe. If they only had to kill them, why did they do the other things? The answer is obvious. Their families were never at risk. They chose to do what they did. Nobody made them do it, and once it got out of control, nobody was there to stop them, either.

In the end, I felt that my group, representing Belgium, did very well in the debate. We were taking a lot of heat in the first half, and we managed that very well. We were also good on the offensive side.

  2. ^actually, in kendra's article, it says you were the ones saying it to other hutus to kill or be killed, and if the hutus didn't respond to the interhamwe's request, the interhamwe would kill there familys.

  3. you were not the one told you could not shoot. that was the United Nations mandate for peace keepers. You left, then we stepped in. If we hadn't there would have many more lives lost and who would hace taken the blame? Belgium. Don't try to blame us when your the one who made the mess in the first place.

  4. It seems that your group is split because some of your closing statements are blaming others and you only agree in blaming France but are divided on blaming others.

  5. Mike, I disagree with your idea that the Genocide was not started by the Belgium. Before the genocide started, you assigned the Hutus and the Tutsis I.D. cards and made the Tutsis think they had power. So I believe that the Genocide was partially your fault.
