Rwandan Debate Closing Statement-France-Lacey Handel-2nd
France would like to state a claim against the U.N. that didn’t get announced yesterday. One month after the genocide started the U.N. decided to send 5,500 troops back to Rwanda, but it didn’t follow through because of disputes over who would pay for it. Now, don’t you think that saving the lives of thousands of Rwandan citizens is more important than who pays for it? Surely the situation at hand is more critical. I mean, you can figure out who pays for it later after this is all over. Also, to the N.R.M.D. who continues to blame us for indirectly training the Interhamwe, consider this. If a child is brought up in a good strong home with morals then is the parent at fault when he goes to prison for murder? If you claim that it’s France’s fault for training the Interhamwe. We trained the N.R.M.D. because we wanted to help protect Hutu civilians from Tutsi forces. Not so you could go turn around and train a militia that will kill everyone and they don’t even care.
The NRMD started the killing, not on such a massive scale but they did commit murders. Also Neil used that metaphor already... I repeat my previous metaphor in response to yours as well.
ReplyDeleteFrance continued to support the NRMD and supply them with weapons even after the genocide started. France is to blame because if they wouldn't have trained the NRMD then they wouldn't have been able to train the Interhamwe and would have had no weapons to give them. This would have prevent the genocide. So France is the one to blame for what the Interhamwe and NRMD did because they could have prevented the whole situation.
