Belgium’s Conclusion Statement

I am representing Belgium in this conclusion statement. I would like to use this opportunity up front to say that everyone made some good points in the debate on Thursday, and that everybody also defended themselves well. However, the United Nations was probably the weakest delegation in the debate because they failed to come up with any new questions for Belgium. They just stated the same question to Belgium over and over again. It was out of sheer desperation that they accused us of making a mess in Rwanda just so they could clean it up. Belgium did create some tensions in Rwanda, but that was as to be expected. Think of the English in Charleston, the French in Louisiana, or the Spanish in Florida. All of these colonies propped one tribe of Native Americans up over another, which lead to tensions and violence, but certainly not genocide. How could one know Rwanda would be any different? Also, it was just racial theory at the time Rwanda was a colony of Belgium (1918-1962) that more the more European a person looked, the more superior they were. The entire west, including America, is guilty of that philosophy. When it comes to finally directing the blame to one delegation, it would have to be the U.N., because they actually went into the situation and did nothing, when they could have done something more than any other country or organization. They are guilty of pure apathy, the worst crime of all.
