Closing Statement: Rwandan Genocide Debate
Emily Vincent 2nd hour
We Represented the Interhamawe in the Rwandan Genocide Debate. Our group believed that yes, we did kill a lot of innocent people but our reasoning was, We were brainwashed by the NRMD and told what we had to do, which was “cut down the tall trees” (kill all the Tutsi’s) we were given the choice that we had to kill the Tutsi’s or we would die along with our families, the French were the ones that trained us though and supplied us with weapons.
The United Nations said that we were wrong for killing all of these people because we shouldn’t have listened to the NRMD and they said “If they told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?” and we backed ourselves up by the fact that we were trapped and we had to do whatever it took to save our families. The United States stated that they didn’t send troops in because, when they wanted to send troops the Rwandan Government had collapsed but they still could’ve sent troops because there were times that the government wasn’t collapsed and they could’ve made this end sooner. The Belgians stated that they withdrew their troops because they wanted their people to be safe, but technically we were their people because they controlled Rwanda for a while but then just decided to leave. The United Nations said in their opening statement during the debate that during the genocide, that “we were stuck with messes that weren’t ours” But isn’t it the U.N’s job to clean up other peoples messes?
In response to the RPF yesterday they asked us why we used such a brutal method of killing and our answer is that bullets and guns were not affordable during the genocide and we didn’t choose what we wanted to kill people with the NRMD were the ones that chose that. Overall during the debate I blame the NRMD for the majority of it and the United Nations.
If the Interhamawe simply had to kill the Tutsis, then why exactly were there crimes of rape and torture as well? I can't imagine that any sane man who only had to kill someone to save his family, would also rape and torture that person as well.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, the united nations proved you all wrong, by saying that it's what you said. You guy's told everyone that you would kill there familys, if they didn't help the interhamwe, there familys were going to be killed. You guys said that.
ReplyDeleteAlly, your comment is irrelevent. We said, "We had to fight to save OUR families." because if we didn't YOU told us that the tutsis would kill them, and even if we could protect ourselves from them you would probably kill us for not cooperating your cause.
